Early '48 8N S/N 20740, front mount. Finally got it running well. Discovered loose right rear wheel, replaced hub which fixed the problem but threads were stripped. Wasted money on the 2 piece clamp nut which didn't hold. Purchased new axle off ebay for $95 from Return policy looked good. Had a new bearing (from yesterdays tractor) pressed on at a local shop for $30 assuming the stupid axle would fit. Stupid axle wouldn't fit in the differential because the grooves in the splines are too shallow/tapered. Was it machined out of spec? Do the newer style axles with the inner oil seal race not fit older style tractors without the inner seal? New axle nut from YT won't fit new axle threads. Now I'm going to have to return the new axle after paying to have the new bearing removed. Then I'll have to pay again to have the bearing pressed on the newer new axle. Called several machine shops. Machining the threads on the original axle is cost prohibitive. I'm ready to set this thing on fire at this point. I don't know what to do other than order a new axle and switch out the bearings. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point.
