Yes, the Coil could melt internal insulation if key switch was left on and points were closed. Once it gets hot, it loses its insulating properties again and thus could short out and kill everything. Once it sets and cools down, it solidifies somewhat -enough to insulate and allow a restart. Could test the coil when next time it shuts down to check resistance static right away before it cools down. Remove coil and measure OHMS from top post to pigtail spring. 6V coil should read about 1.3 OHMS. This test would require working around a hot engine so use caution.
