Small world. I went to grade school and high school in Laurium. I was going to mention trolls but the term has a different connotation now.
The Straits are a real barrier between the Peninsulas. The Upper is more closely tied culturally and economically to Wisconsin than to the Lower. For me the there was a palpable difference when I crossed the bridge into the UP. Going there from Wisconsin I didn't get the same feeling.
Best pasties are homemade IMO. Flank steak or chuck diced not ground. Potatoes diced OK but turnips or 'begas better. Carrots optional. Crust made using lard. Salt and pepper. I've been with a California girl for 35 plus years. Danska heritage. I showed her how to make them. I watched her the first time she made them. Only condiment for a pasty is Heinz ketchup. Hunts' is OK, as is the IGA or Shopkos' house brand.
Should be served hot with cold Miller Lite or Budweiser.
