Dean is exactly right. The Sherman Combo brochure even has a chart that shows a ground speed of 3.56 MPH, and PTO at 545 RPM, when running in straight-drive 2nd gear at 1500 RPM. The chart shows the exact same ground speed and PTO RPM when running in Step-Down 2nd gear with the engine at Full-Throttle. That equals getting something like 37% more horsepower from the same tractor while running at the same ground speed.
Another option on the chart for really heavy mowing would be Step-Down First gear at Full Throttle for a ground speed of 2.77 MPH and the PTO still doing 545 RPM.
Of course both of these will be burning a lot more fuel. The Sherman brochure suggests using overdrive gears and reduced engine RPM for mowing when the work does not require as much horsepower. That is what I do to basically putt putt around on wooded trails with the cutter still doing 540 RPM.
