Whoa! Think this through. Your lights are grounded through their mountings.
You have one wire from each going back to the switch. (I don't care if you run one across and bring one back or if you bring two back)
Now you say you have the switch grounded. You also said the lights are on all of the time.
Where are the lights getting the power to be on all of the time?
The wire(s) from the lights should go to the switch.
The other wire from the switch should go to the UN-GROUNDED battery terminal.
If you want the lights to go off when you turn the ignition off, run that switch wire to a switched voltage out of the ignition switch rather than the battery terminal.
