Many of those early 9N tractors were doing just fine as originally designed. Anything that does not have a pressure oil supply is relying on oil splashing where it needs to go. Apparently, in too many cases, the splash-oiling proved to be insufficient. Maybe those tractors were being operated in some way that created the problem. No doubt somebody at Ford did the math and decided it was cheaper to add the new oil line than whatever percentage of failures they were getting.

Relative condition of any two tractors today mostly boils down to the entire life-history of each machine. At some point most of them have been sitting idle for periods of months or years. It would make a huge difference if they were sitting exposed outdoors, under a roof, in a barn, or a conditioned garage.
