The best way I found to remember the shut off valve is to follow this sequence on shut down:
After I park the tractor, lower lift, put trans in neutral, set parking brake, then I let the engine idle while I shut the fuel valve off. When the engine starts to sputter due to running out of gas, I turn the key off. Since I got in the habit of doing it this way, I haven't had anymore trouble remembering to shut the fuel off.
If you can't smell gas on the oil from the dipstick, might not have leaked into the oil. You might be lucky. The oil level should be an easy indicator.
