You now have a 6v tractor that won't run. Until you find the reason for that, you will have a 12v tractor that won't run either.

Regarding the coil.......About 5 years ago, my neighbor proudly told me about fixing his 8N. Seems like it wouldnít start, so he replaced the coil. Tractor started, problem solved. I asked him if I could have the old coil. He gave it to me. I put it on one of my 8Nís where it has been ever since.

I do not know why his tractor would not start. I do not know why it did start and ran fine after he put a new coil on it. Sure, I can make a lot of guesses, but we will never know for sure.

But I do know he did not have a bad coil.

Think about this the next time you are inclined to just start replacing parts w/o determining if the part is defective.

But to fix your problem...........donít guess at the cause of the problem; guessing can get expensive. And leave you breathless chasing every could be this, it could be that......just troubleshoot the problem and leave the guess work for buying Lottery tickets.

Check for spark and fuel. (tip # 13)

You need to answer 2 questions before you do anything else:

With the bolt in the carb bowl removed and the gas on, will the fuel flow fill a pint jar in less than 2 minutes?

Next, get out your adjustable gap spark checker * , open the gap to 1/4", hook it up, turn the key on and crank the engine. Does the spark jump 1/4"? Post back with the answers.

And do not buy a new part for the tractor until you can answer this question: how do I know the part on the tractor is defective?

* Don't own an adjustable gap spark checker? Buy one! Not a test light! Until then, take an old plug, open the gap 1/4" ground it to the head & look for spark. Itís not the color of the spark that counts; itís the distance it jumps.
