Why did you take the battery cable off? If engine starts after a rewire, and amp gauge shows charging until the battery is back to a full charge, and you don't see any smoke, you are done, everything is good. Move on to the next project. Removing a battery cable at that point is only going to show how big a spark you can make. Arcs and sparks are very bad for electronics. If an alternator or new breakerless ignition module were included in the rewire, both can be instantly fried by the arcs and sparks this "test" causes. I don't know of any useful information this test would ever show. Alternator or generator makes no difference as far as the usefulness of this test. To my knowledge the only people who ever got any benefit from this test would be dishonest mechanics who wanted to sell parts that were not needed. A better test would be to hook up a voltmeter. If you see something in the neighborhood of 14 volts for a 12 volt system with the engine running, that is good.
