Here's where you went wrong:
"and put flywheel at 8 degrees".

Set flywheel at 0 degrees
Install distributor with rotor pointing at no.1
Tighten distributor clamp
Done

With engine stopped, initial timing is 0 degrees. After engine is running, at well over idle RPM, you can use a timing light to check if the mechanical advance has cranked it around to 8 degrees before. I don't bother with that. If initial timing is right, and engine seems to run right, assume mechanical advance is working, and move on to the next task on my list for the day.
