I just answered this question on YT.
End clerance should be as little as possible - certainly no more than .005. As I said on the other forum - some of the aftermarket replacement gears (both 9/16 and 3/4") are undersize and you need to measure new gears to make sure they are the proper width:
3/4" gears = .724/.725
9/16 gears = .624/.625
If your new gears measure less than that they cannot be made to work - return them to the seller along with an explanation of the defect. If enough people complain maybe the problem will get fixed. In the meantime the gears provided in the Tisco kits are known to be correct and it's all I will buy at this point.
