First bit of advice is to always use the original parts whenever possible on these old N's. New stuff made today is pretty much junk. The original parts were designed and made to be rebuilt over and over. A good starter/alternator shop can rebuild generators and starters as well as test them and your ammeter, VR, and battery as well. Carbs and distributors can be rebuilt by yourself or some of us here. The PROOFMETER is not an electrical device, it is mechanical so installing a new generator has nothing to do with it. I suspect you have something boogered up in your wiring. here's a LINK to our HOW-TO's forum for a document created by Jesse Morris, "WIRING PICTOGRAMS by JMOR" which has very possible CORRECT way to wire these old N's. You don't say if you have a 6-volt or a 12-volt battery. If 6-volt, it should be wired positive ground. If 12-volt, you should be using an alternator, not a generator. Since you have already purchased a new generator, if you wish to get rid of your old one, my email is open.
