The 1940 9N Instruction Book actually says "Do not lubricate ball and socket joints or the pins of the linkage." At the bottom of that same page it says "Do not lubricate where no provision has been made for lubrication." However, I cannot find those two "do not lubricate" statements in my 1948 or 1950 Operator's Manuals. The section on lubricants in the 8N manuals starts with the statement "Clean lubricants prevent self destruction in all mechanical devices." It seems obvious to me that someone realized those earlier "Do not lubricate" statements were not exactly right. Wonder how many rusty frozen parts it took to figure that out? Where there is no provision for grease, I generally apply grease to the surfaces before they are assembled. I'd rather have grease and dirt in there than water and dirt. Even better, add a grease fitting, and hit it with the grease gun once in a while.
