Well now, in cold temps, below 32°F, I'd be more concerned that my battery had a good sustainable full charge on it than the oil temp. I live in Michigan where winters are 9 months year round (practically)September thru May typically. I have had my 8N stored outside, tarped, many winters off and on, and it has only given me trouble starting once. The root cause was a weak battery. It is and has always been original 6-volt/positive ground. A weak discharged battery will lose over 50% of its effectiveness when cold. The other secret, especially with 6-volts, is to keep the PM up before winter hits. Oil change, tune-up, battery charge, et al. Keep a battery float charger on it -I know its hard to do when stored outside but maybe put battery in garage or shed to keep charged. I've never used oil heaters and not saying they are a waste so don't send me letters. I saw a near disaster once on Christmas Day when my B-I-L put a 100w trouble light on his car battery and it melted through the top of he case.
