I would agree to remove the hood and tank first but advise getting a buddy, wife, girlfriend, son, daughter to help. I also strongly advise when doing so to first disconnect the battery so if something shorts out, you won't fry something and cause more work. I don't know what a 'quick job' is for anything, but it usually means the task will have to be redone sooner or later correctly. Avoid shortcuts, temporary fix/Band-Aids. Do It Right The First Time. It doesn't matter if it has hex bolts or studs and nuts, it is the work involved and if the head has not been off in a long time, even more reason to do the job right. Why do you think it must be done now just for a weekend parade? I'd use it as-is and do the head job after when you are not under a time constraint -it is Wednesday now - and when the job can be done correctly. Just my advice...you asked.
