Subassemblies were painted prior to assembly line if specs denoted it on blueprints. There is a picture of worker spray-painting a 2N as it rolls down the line with carb, generator, and other parts already assembled. I've worked on probably 250-250 M/S carbs in my lifetime and I've seen many unpainted, some that were black, some that were 9N gray, and some that were red. Heck I had one or two green, yellow, and orange ones as well. Only the Ford/Marvel-Schebler carb drawing would tell us if there was a paint spec denoted on it. Ditto for any other part supplied offline or by outside vendors. Here is a M/S TSX-33 carb, used on 9N, 2N, and early 8N models, that I recently rebuilt. I always blast and paint the body when I do a rebuild just because I like it better painted and I want the body halves free of dirt and debris.
