yes, there were many of these built. The Purdy family was responsible for this one after seeing one in Iowa in the late 1800's. Here's the LINK to the web site where you can read about its history. The Purdy family were in the banking business and after the Depression, went to Washington to petition the president to institute a form of Federal protection for the banking business. Thus the FDIC was born. Another note, and I find this a bit humorous, is that the construction company who built those structures then were called the Munro Brothers. Those of us who watched "Petticoat Junction" and "Green Acres" might recall the Munro Brothers brother and sister carpenter team in both shows.
