It sounds like your driveline shaft is too short in the extended position. I used mine this week too drill a couple of holes and it's longer than 46" in the extended position. Since it's new are you sure they didn't put sometime like a zip tie or packaging to prevent the shaft from sliding in or out during shipping. Also since most tractor supply store their implements outside, who know how long it has been sitting there, maybe it got a little moisture in there making it hard to slide in or out, although it should have been greased from the factory. I've had this happen on a mower deck that was stored out side and had to use some kroil to free it up.
