My 51 had the same problem recently. After taking cover off I found that the shaft that the handle attaches to and the bushings that holds the shaft were almost frozen together with rust. I don't see anyway that you can lube it except by taking it apart. These are part numbers 9N517, (shaft), and 8N515, (quadrant). Mine had to come apart anyway to replace the piston and cylinder plus the cam follower pin. Maybe yours got stiffer as you went because it was warming up.
