The 8N pushbutton has one wire from the start solenoid. The pushbutton should provide a ground connection for that wire when pressed. If the neutral interlock is working, the pushbutton cannot be pressed unless the transmission is in neutral. There are so few safety features on these tractors, what they do have should be considered very important. Pushbutton is east to test. Terminal floats when button is up, becomes grounded when button is pressed. Use an ohmmeter or test light. Solenoid can be tested by making sure the tractor is in neutral, then grounding the small terminal to any good ground nearby.

If the solenoid is the type that needs a switched hot to the small terminal to engage, then the correct tractor solenoid was replaced with a lookalike automotive type.
