The Sherman combination transmission is just about bullet proof in an N series Ford.
I have Sherman combination transmissions in 51 and 52 8Ns. Both are in low range probably 95% of the time, direct, maybe 2 or 3%, and HI, maybe 1 or 2%.
I just about always use lo range for mowing with a rotary cutter, direct, rarely in light cover and level ground when I need to get from point A to point B while mowing. Blade speed is fine (sharp blades) and torque is much increased.
High is for those very, very rare occasions traveling on good road surfaces without much load and/or hills.
