If the tractor is running and able to drive ask him when he moves the lever back towards the operator will the tractor speed up or slow down. If not running you can use the system in my video to determine a step up or step down. The 8n, because of the gearing, will be slightly different but you still should be able to tell.
Often sellers who have a sherman combo do not realize that in the neutral detent you can put the handle out and back to access the normal range gears so they will advertise it as a sherman Hi/Lo.
