Ya can do it that way. I prefer to use the dipstick method and when refilling -only use 4 gallons of hydraulic oil, not 5. Fill slow; Check for leaks; Run system; Check for leaks; let settle then check level again. There's always a bit of oil in the system if not all purged by a thorough cleaning, and if you just go and dump five gallons of fresh, new oil in, chances are it will leak out, usually around the inspection covers.
