Usually such products will "thicken" the oil in the crankcase. Names that have been around a long time and have a good track record will give good results. I have used some of these with no ill effects.

Do not think that all your oil leaks and burning will totally stop. Usage of these products will usually help, but eventually, later in life you will be in need of mechanical help.

One thing you need think about is cold weather. Will the thicker oil be a bother in winter? Try some and see what you think. The additive will blend with the oil so don't worry about it causing a line to plug. I never heard of using too much additive and making the oil too thick, but that would seem to be a waste of cash.

Start with a good oil and filter change, and new hotter plugs if you are not already using them. The only additive that I have used enough to feel I can vouch for would be Slick50 products. I like them. I have used others with good results.

Hope that helps,
