Well Doug apparently you have a very rare hood on your tractor. Nancy Falk Fossum (Palmer Fossum daughter) told the story. Here it is.
A little while back I was tagged in a post. (on a different site) Tyler Stefancin had asked the question if anyone had ever seen a hood like this before? It is original Ford hood that was stamped twice on the left hand side with the Ford script. A gentleman had been to our place and had seen our V8 and knew we had the exact same Hood with the double stamps. And the story (according to Palmer) the reasoning behind this double stamp! And here it is!
Alright guys here's the story! In the end of 1952 which was the end of the production of the 8N tractors. Ford Motor Company run off approximately 500 replacement hoods for dealers to sell to customers that needed a new hood for their tractor if they accidentally ran into a tree and smashed theirs. In about 1996 my dad (Palmer Fossum) purchased two of these Hoods from an old Ford tractor dealership. They were brand-new primed but not painted upstairs in the dealership. After purchasing them there was much discussion about the reasoning for this. Approximately 4 years after he purchased them. A man that worked for Ford that worked on the hood assembly line contacted my dad that the last five or six hoods that were ever made for an 8N by Ford in 1952 in to 1953 was stamped twice on the left hand side basically for s**** and giggles! These hoods are definitely NOT reproduction hoods! There has been a lot of speculation about these hoods. There has been a lot of people that has came and measured it! but if you measure from the body line to the bottom of the Ford script it is the exact same as the Ford script on the front of the tractor. So from what we understand as of right now there are possibly four of the 5 or 6 out there! And yes these hoods are extremely rare! We have no idea what the value of one of these hoods are worth. There is the story of the double stamped hoods.
