I don't know John, I have a complete SteelCraft Cab assembly with these running boards and they are pretty robust -it would take more than a cornstalk or high weeds to tear them off. They mount with HD braces across the bottom of the tractor -see Instruction Sheet above. I'd tend to think the muffler shields were removed when the entire muffler/exhaust pipe needed replacing and never re-installed at the time. It's like the battery covers. Many were just removed to replace the battery and never re-installed. -just what I think, my opinion, so your mileage may vary...
