9N trans fill plug
Hello, I have aquired a 1940 9N ser 10747. If I am correct the tractor is still early enough that the transmission(despite having a steering box mounted dipstick) should still have the side fill plug and the trans number stamped in it but it has neither. BUT it has a Sherman Step-up in it. So I am guessing that when the Sherm went in, rather than swapping it to helical gears they just swapped in an entire 2N transmission. Am I correct, should that it have a level plug and a stamped number?

Re: 9N trans fill plug
Trans case was change around that time so maybe yes and maybe no. My 9574 trans number has plug. My1940 11xxx has no numbers and no plug. As far as the helical gear goes it would depend on how early the Sherman was put in cause they did make a straight cut output gear on the early step ups. To check this pull the trans fill plug and shine a light towards the front of case to see if it’s helical or straight cut gear.

Re: 9N trans fill plug
My 1940 9N has the step up Sherman. I do not have any of the items you list including the steering box mounted dipstick.

Go to the bar on the top of this page and click on Links, when you get to the Links section click on John Smith, it will tell you when the changes took place on the 9N.
